Hot weather can be tough on our furry, feathered, or scaled friends! Here’s how to keep pets safe, cool, and happy all summer long:
1. 🐾 Hydration is Everything
Always Fresh Water: Refill bowls more often—heat makes pets drink more.
Add Extra Bowls: Especially if pets roam between rooms or outdoors.
Frozen Treats: Ice cubes, frozen fruit (for dogs), or safe DIY pupsicles = fun & cool.
2. 🌡️ Beat the Heat
Limit Outdoor Time: Walk dogs early morning or late evening.
No Hot Pavement: Use the “5-second rule”—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!
Provide Shade: Whether it’s a bird cage near a window or a dog in the yard, always offer shade.
3. 🚫 Avoid Overheating
Watch for Heatstroke Signs: Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, or vomiting—act fast.
Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even with windows cracked, temps rise dangerously in minutes.
Use Fans & Cooling Mats: Great for indoor pets during peak heat hours.
4. ✂️ Grooming & Coat Care
Regular Brushing: Helps airflow and removes shedding fur.
Don’t Shave Certain Breeds: Double-coated dogs (like huskies) use their coat to regulate temperature!
Birds & Baths: Offer a shallow bath or misting to keep them refreshed.
5. 🦟 Bug & Parasite Protection
Use Preventatives: Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are more active in summer.
Keep Food Covered: Avoid attracting bugs around food and water dishes.
Clean Habitats Regularly: Especially for outdoor enclosures, litter boxes, and cages.
6. 🧳 Summer Travel & Safety
Update ID Tags & Microchips: In case pets get lost on vacation.
Pack Pet Essentials: Food, collapsible bowls, leash, vet records if you’re hitting the road.
Boarding? Visit and book early—good places fill up fast in summer!
